    Airsoft Review – Pulse-R70 (M4 Carbine)

Posted by admin on February 24th, 2010 and filed under pulse rate | 16 Comments »

First off, to everyone whose said nice shirt, thanks.
This is my review of the cheap electric airsoft gun you can find at places like wal-mart. Essentially; good beginers gun (better than a pistol) but thats about it. If you are going to be serious about airsofting, save up and buy a better gun (like the MP5, which I’ll review soon) 1-5 scale w\ 5 as the best:
    .12 bb
    Accuracy: 2 – 3
    .2 bb
    Accuracy: 3 – 4
    Aiming: 1
Pain(5 hurts most) 2 (regardles of bb)
Looks: 3 but can easily be a 4 or 5; all black model helps instead of clear
Intimidation level: 4 even when people don’t know it hurts, so long as your playing with people who only have crappy spring pistols!
Rate of Fire: 4 – Best thing about this gun

    Weight: 4.5 lbs
Magazine Capacity: Up to 600 rds
    Barrel Material: Precision Aluminum
    Body and Stock: Hard Plastic
Velocity: up to 150 fps (Heavier BB’s make you gun more accurate which is neccesary for this gun, but it also brings down the effective range!)

The Fat Burning Zone and You

Posted by admin on February 21st, 2010 and filed under pulse rate | 16 Comments »

Often people who want to lose weight are told that in order to lose fat they would have to keep their heart rate in the “fat burning zone” or have a “fat burning pulse”.

It is true that with a lower heart rate most of the energy you use to fuel your cardio activity will come from fat. But will you really burn more fat in total? In this video we’ll put some light on the issue.

Please keep in mind that the examples and data given are a bit simplified, as otherwise this would have become a very long video.

First “test ride” characterizing an anemometer

Posted by admin on December 4th, 2009 and filed under pulse rate | No Comments »

Students here are using a battery-powered PLC (with an HMI display) to monitor the pulse rate generated by a wind speed anemometer as they drive at set speeds in a car. The anemometer is hung out the passenger-side window, and the pulse rate viewed on the HMI screen at different speeds. This data will be used to calculate a “k-factor” relating miles per hour (MPH) to pulses per minute (PPM), which will later be used in the PLC program to display miles per hour windspeed directly.

Unfortunately, there were some bugs in the HMI programming (some of the function key buttons were not programmed to do what they should have), and the test had to be aborted. Still, it’s a cool demonstration of industrial technology being used in a novel application, and shows how students apply their knowledge to practical measurement scenarios.
