New Products To Be Announced at SPIE Photonics West

    January 21, 2010: Tourmaline TETA
To meet the increasing demand for industrial ultrafast laser systems, Del Mar Photonics has introduced the Tourmaline TETA – femtosecond regenerative Yb-based compact amplifier system. It produces 300-fs pulses with average power of 1 W. The pulse energy varies with repetition rate, with 50 uJ@20 kHz and 150 uJ@1 kHz. The system is mainly aimed at micromachining industrial applications, but can be easily used for scientific experiments, such as THz imaging, OPA pumping, remote sensing and ultrafast microscopy.
The system is fully PC-controlled, and offers high stability due to simple direct diode pumping scheme. Harmonic generator option with up to 4th harmonic conversion is also available.

    January 21, 2010: Pearl
Pearl Er-doped femtosecond compact fiber laser from Del Mar Photonics is a femtosecond fiber laser operating in C-band (1530-1565 nm). The rigid design of the laser ensures insensitivity to physical and vibration impact, high stability, repeatability of initial specs and make it ideal for OEM applications. Pulse duration can be ordered in the range of 100 fs – 5 ps, pulse shape being close to transform-limited. The Pearl laser has average power rating of up to 50 mW and offer budget-friendly solution for low power applications, such as amplifier seeding. High frequency electrical output of the laser can be used as a trigger for system synchronization.

    January 21, 2010: Reef-M
Del Mar Photonics introduces scanning autocorrelator for microscopy. The Reef-M provides two simultaneous measurements: one at the focal plane of the microscope and the other before the microscope input. The comparison of the pulse duration obtained in these two measurements determines the pulse broadening due to the dispersion of the microscope’s optics. Measurement of the temporal and spatial profile of the beam in the focal spot of the microscope is vital for any experiment as the shorter is the pulse the higher is the efficiency of the nonlinear process (2 or 3-photon excitation) and less energy is needed. It also ensures image optimization and correct intensity level to avoid sample damage.
Different models of the autocorrelator cover several wavelength ranges, with the Reef-MM model combining the ranges by using 3 sets of photodetectors and optics. Input pulse duration ranges from 10 fs to 6 ps.

    January 11, 2010: Tourmaline A5
Tourmaline A5 series optical amplifiers are based on short and highly-doped glass fibers. They deliver Watts-level output power in a diffraction-limited, collimated beam at 1 micron. The overall short length of the gain fiber (20 centimeters) alleviates the detrimental nonlinear effects that accompany amplification of ultrashort laser pulses in conventional doped fibers based on fused silica glass. Tourmaline OA amplifiers are integrated with the internal pump source and control electronics. They present the user with a low-cost, one-box solution for boosting the output power from modelocked fiber-laser oscillators to the Watt range and beyond.

    Tourmaline A5
    Wavelength of operation: 1 mkm
Saturated average output power: 5 W
Saturating average input power: 15 mW
    Output beam: Free-space, collimated, diffraction-limited
    Dimensions: 35 cm (L), 8 cm (W), 4 cm (H)

    January 11, 2010: Tamarack A1.5
Tamarack A1.5 series optical amplifiers are based on short and highly-doped glass fibers. They deliver Watts-level output power in a diffraction-limited, collimated beam at 1.5 micron.

Phil’s design of a valve FM pulse counting tuner using safe 25 volt HT line

Posted by admin on March 20th, 2010 and filed under pulse amplifier | No Comments »

This is a working version of one of the easiest valve FM tuners that can be built on earth. It has a low frequency IF of around 250KHZ and as a result there are no IF coils to wind. There is a total of 6 Valves in this design. The RF section is a double triode ECC88 and half of the triode is a grounded grid RF amplifier resulting in very stable RF performance. The other half is a autodyne converter using the cathode tap electron coupled oscillator idea. The other 3 ECC88 triodes that follow are resistance coupled IF amplifiers followed by the limiter. The 5th valve that follows is a EB91 or 6AL5 double diode to form as a voltage doubling pulse counting detector resulting in very good mono reproduction. It also uses a safe 25 volt HT line making it ideal for absolute beginner’s to valves to construct. There are only 2 RF coils to wind. Stereo reception does not work very good with this design due to the low IF but I am working on the posibility of stereo in the later future. As you can see in the video there are no solid state active devices helping this design out and for its low HT line it works as good as sets that use a 250V HT Line.

Make a chemiluminescent reaction with home chemicals

Posted by admin on March 20th, 2010 and filed under pulse oxygen | 25 Comments »

In this video we show how to make a chemiluminescent singlet oxygen red light pulse from two simple chemicals almost anyone can buy: Pool Chlorine and hydrogen peroxide.

NOTE: This is not a true “glow stick” type reaction. It uses a slightly different operating principle then the one that actual glow sticks use. Type “singlet oxygen chemiluminescence” into google for more info.

WARNING: This reaction will produce highly toxic chlorine gas, do this OUTSIDE!!!

It’s also rather unimpressive so do this only because you’re interested in chemistry, not because you want to glow stuff up. A real glow stick is cheaper, safer, and much brighter.

Simply get 30% hydrogen peroxide and fill a tall container (a jar will do) with about 25mL. Then get a teaspoon of pool chlorine and dump it in. Crush your pool chlorine first if it comes in tablet form.

Perform the reaction at night and you’ll see a dim pulse of red light. This is singlet oxygen.

Afterward, the reaction will also heat up and start generating chlorine gas so leave the mixture alone outside overnight before you dispose of it.

Although nowhere nearly as good as an actual glow stick, completely useless as a light source, and somewhat dangerous, this experiment is nonetheless the most straightforward way to demonstrate chemiluminescence.
