Its a pulse jet …
Its a pulse jet engine, invented around 1906. Was used in the V-1 Flying bomb in Germany. In the first part of the cycle, air flows through the intake (top tube) and mixed with fuel (the bend). Secondly, the valve is closed and the fuel is ignited which propels the craft. Google it for more information.
