A nice view from the top during the starting and transition phase. Notice the way the temperature increases down the length of the motor. Finally a dramatic flame-out at the end of the video. The two induction pipes stay cold and the last third of the conical tailpipe stays cold too. No mechanical valves in these motors. It is the plugs of cold air in both the tailpipe and the induction pipes that allow pressure build in the combustion region; the cold, high density air has a lot of momentum and confines the combustion allowing pressure to increase. Finally, the ejection of these cold plugs is largely responsible for the motors thrust. Unlike the Turbojet these motors are non-steady pressure gain combustors.
