My dog absolutely loses his mind when he hears a power drill. What can I do to stop this behavior?

He’s very laid back, sometimes I have to check his pulse to see if he’s alive. Get the drill out and he turns into an 8lb psycho.
We are about to tackle a large remodeling project and I wont send him to a ‘doggy day care’.

Counter conditioning and desensitization.

Get some incredible treats (little bits of roasted chicken work great for my dogs) either let the dog just see it (if it reacts to even seeing it) and feed the dog treats. Keep the drill far enough away so that the dog can eat the treats. You might need someone to help you as this progresses. This is just an example of how you could proceed. Have someone take the drill into another room (so it’s not so loud and near the dog) and turn it on for a second.Treat the dog. Repeat repeat repeat repeat, until the dog begins to look for the treat when he hears the drill. Then have them turn it on for a bit longer, or move closer to the dog. Again, treat the dog. You want the dog to hear the drill and instead of thinking "OH S__T!" it thinks "WHERE’S THE CHICKEN?!" Ultimately you won’t need to keep feeding your dog the treats, because the drill is no longer scary.

How often are you power drilling, really? I mean, if he was going berserk every time your phone rang, or you brushed your teeth, that would be a problem. Is this really a problem?

Take him to a therapist, maybe he thinks about dentists, and it’s interfering with his motor skills.

The sound of the drill probably really bothers him. Dogs can hear things so much better than us. If the drill has a certain pitch, it could really irritated him. If you are going to start a large re-modeling project, I would find another place for him to stay. If it’s not doggie daycare, then a friend or family members house?

First off,.. the truth is there likely isn’t anything you can do because of the damage this does to his hearing and problems his body has. Maybe you can like it to haveing someone scratching a Black Board while someone drills your head/skull.

I can tell you what people do with Dogs and Guns. They act relaxed, ignore the gun, have the dog strapped down,.. and blow out their hearing by getting closer and closer to them. The hearing loss really helps as well as seeing their household actting like normal like it is neither a threat nor entertaining.

Maybe you guys could work on some simple projects with the dog strapped to something. You will have to hold your tounge, pain reaction, and keep a happy clam expression while you hurt yourself and make mistakes. It might also help if there was some way to simulate the sounds on something that takes the shape of a drill and set it next to the dog,.. leaveing it there and ignoreing it and the dog. Eventurally have this touching the Dog for 5 minute increments at first and then eventurally leaveing it up against the dog for about 20 minutes.

If it’s not hurting your Dog then they should adapt to this and calm down. If it is hurting your Dog then they will not be able to adapt unless they lose all their hearing in the same range as the sounds the drill makes.

Your alternative is to make a safe haven for the dog away from the construction. Line a box or Dog House to block out all sound and give the Dog a place to go when it needs a break from it’s headache.

Some Vets are use to these situations and traveling problems. They have prescriptions for Cats, Dogs, and some other animals that make popular pets. These calm down the animal but the smaller the animal the higher the risk of a bad reaction and damage.

Sounds like no matter what you do you will want to look for Vets with these calming perscriptions ASAP. Unfortunately some are Shots and you may need to visit periodicly for the shots or be taught how to give them.

Good Luck :( This is a difficult thing to go through.

He was obviously a construction foreman in a previous life. Tell him to calm down and let him supervise. Poor dog still has flashes of his previous life. Don’t forget his liquid lunch with the boys.

Not much you can do. It hurts his ears. Anybody willing to dog-sit for you until the remodeling is over? If that’s not an option, going for "walkies" then the drill is in operation would help. Of course, that begs the question of who’s using the drill. If it’s you, then I’m out of suggestions.

    Hey,
when I read this, I ran out in the kitchen and chucked a wobbly all over the kitchen floor squealing about how the noises the dishes made in the water as I started washing them up really freaked me out.

The girls that I flat with rushed straight to my side with a worried look on their boots and kicked the cr*p outta me.

Guess it only works for dogs and drills huh?

    Seriously though,
get the box the drill came in, insert the ratbag dog and send it return to Canberra by Fedex, by which time you should have finished the renovation, and the freaky lil dog will NEVER be game enough to kick up a stink about the drill (or anything else) again.

No, really, I was just joking there,
take the doggy on a nice long holiday somewhere they never do drilling, and get a builder in,…….. or I’ll report you to the RSP….erm….NRMA………….. or some-one.

    (lil snookums)

    lol.

It’s the high pitch whine that is driving him nuts. Most likely he hears a pitch (like a dog whistle) that you can’t hear. You can try to turn the drill (a bad thing) into a good thing.

    - Put him on an evening feeding schedule.
    - Turn the drill on and off (where you feed him)
    - Wait for him to calm down and come to you
-Give him a treat, pet him and feed him
It may take a week or more but he will start to associate the drill and a good thing ie. Praise, treats and supper.

Or – Slip him 1/2 a Prozac before you start construction -JK
