I have to agree with you to an extent. I also believe that knowledge is only power if you utilize it. What is the use of having the knowledge of something if it is useless. Take the people on jeopardy.... they have vast knowledge of useless crap... but do they have common sense? Are those people dripping with knowledge or do they have exceptionally good memories? They are contestants on jeopardy with no mention of great powers. What about people who have come into power who never went to school?
Don't get me wrong, knowledge is one of the most important TOOLS we can have. Without it we can be worthless but with it... some can still be worthless.
References :
After ending a ten-year relationship with a girl because we had stopped communicating. We both "knew" there were problems but we never spoke of it, never talked about it, never did anything about it. Eventually we just ended.

I entered in my next--and present--relationship with the mantra "Communication is Key" playing constantly in the background.

I think this is what you are getting at. And I agree. However, knowledge is still fuel and grease for the machine, both things we cannot do without. By seeking knowledge, we keep our minds--I'm talking individually here, but it can be extrapolated to any degree you would like--searching, exploring, dynamic, and malleable. In this sense, knowledge is power, would you not agree?
References :
You've made the point that knowledge is useless, or perhaps even harmful, without expressions that attract attention and thus bring power. My own concept of power is that it is a perception. If others perceive me to be powerful, than I am. I'm taking a guess, but that seems to gel with your conception of power too.

Getting back to the phrase "knowledge is power", I see it as an axiom for power over one's own self. If I am ignorant of my own self and circumstances, that I have no chance to have the power to change any of it.

Going further, I believe self-awareness is the exact type of knowledge that allows one to alter his/her relationship with the outside world. This would be the action/expression I believe you were referring to above. In changing this relationship, I believe it is wholly possible for someone to alter themselves in a particular manner as to cause others to perceive them to be powerful.

At the root of this power is knowledge.. knowledge of one's self and thus the phrase holds for me.
References :
Stated more correctly, knowledge is analogous to power. If you posses great knowledge, you have the ability to gain wealth. Wealth is true power. Nobody listens to a poor guy, and often for good reason.
References :
Knowledge is power .™

If you have knowledge, you indeed have power over things.

It's a matter of application .Who wouldn't react to things if he has knowledge over it ?
