In the movie, Orphan, did Esther succeed in killing Daniel in the ICU at the hospital?

You see Esther take off his oxygen mask and little finger pulse thingy, and smother him with the pillow, and his eyes were still like death. But then the doctors came and said, "I found a pulse." Help?

I’m positive that he survived. I think when Kate is calmed down and drowsy from the drug, her husband tells her to not worry about Daniel and that he will be staying at the hospital for a couple of days.
