why is my heart rate/pulse so average?

My heart rate is 121/58 and my pulse is 70. Yet I am very active and I thought that I was in good cardio vascular shape. But I’ve been told by my doctor that athletes generally have numbers that are in the 40′s-50′s but mine is all the way at seventy.

What’s up? Am I just not in as good a shape as I thought?

Quite honestly it could be several factors:

1) Age- I do know that younger people tend to have more rapid heart rates then someboy older. the athletes he was telling you about, are they adults?

2) Pain- Pain can actually increase your BPM, and quite honestly I do not know anybody who trains seriously that doesn’t generally have some kind of pain they deal with.

3) Emotion- Fear, anger, anxiety, and excitment. I know at the doctors my BPM are always quite a bit higher then when I take it at home, just because I get stressed about the doctor. Try taking your own pulse when you are nice and relaxed.

4) Training that San Shou and submission wrestling instead of a good Okinawan style. :-)

(Before anyone crucifies me, seriously joking with number 4 in case you don’t know me)

The best time to check your vitals is when you wake up before you get out of bed. Those seem like very normal numbers, so I wouldn’t worry too much
