I almost fainted while walking. So I took my blood pressure, pulse and blood sugar and everything was completely normal. I feel so weak though. My breathing is a little off as well, what can this be?

Anxiety. We all become trembly if we are angry, stressed, anxious (‘shaking with nerves’) or very tired.

Low blood sugar causes shakiness because the nerves and muscles are deprived of fuel. The adrenaline system responds by kicking in, and this can make the shakiness worse for a while. The circumstances will make it obvious if this is what is happening in your case. A low blood sugar is most likely to occur if you eat a lot of sugary snack foods; these raise the blood sugar sharply, but then it plummets down again. The answer is to eat more slowly digested carbohydrates, such as porridge for breakfast instead of a sweet cereal and fruit instead of sweet puddings. Low blood sugar can also occur after excessive exercise.

Too much coffee and tea can make you a bit shaky, particularly in combination with a low blood sugar. So cut down the amount of coffee or strong tea that you drink, and avoid snack ‘meals’ that are mainly sweet foods and lots of coffee.

‘Essential tremor’ is one of the most common types of shakiness. Instead of contracting at random, the tiny muscle fibres contract and relax together (‘synchronization’), resulting in more noticeable movements. (In medicine, the word ‘essential’ has a special meaning – it is used to describe a condition that is not caused by any other medical condition or disease, but simply exists on its own.)
Essential tremor is unusual in young people, but affects 1 in 20 of the population over the age of 40.
It tends to run in families, so some of your close relatives may also have it.
It usually affects the hands, often the head, and sometimes the voice and other parts of the body as well.
It becomes worse when you use your hands to do something, such as picking up a small object, or if you try to maintain a position, such as holding a cup steady. If you rest your hands quietly on your lap, the shaking usually stops.
It is uncontrollable and does not mean you are ‘nervy’ or ‘neurotic’ (although, frustratingly, it becomes worse when you are anxious).
An alcoholic drink often improves it, but obviously you should not overdo this remedy.
If the shaking is really troublesome, your doctor can prescribe a drug such as a beta-blocker or primidone. Avoid too much coffee and strong tea.

which blood vessel is where pulse and blood pressure are detected?
and
why are pulse and blood pressure only felt in this blood vessel?

thank you for answering…

It’s your artery.

This blood vessel has the most pressure because it carries blood away from the heart to other organs and tissues. Because of it’s high pressure the ‘pounding’ is more easily detectable. This ‘pounding’ actually occurs because the artery passes over a bone.

So basically this answers yours second question, the pulse is only felt in this blood vessel because it has the highest pressure since its the blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart. It needs this high pressure in order the carry blood (which contains vital components such as oxygen) all around the body.

At school we had a doctor’s test and my blood pressure was 128/79 and my pulse was 117

Is that good? My pulse was a little highe cause I was nevous.

Once when I was watching The Dr Oz Show, he said blood pressure should be about 115/75. Your systolic pressure (128) is a bit high, but I wouldn’t worry too much. As you said with your pulse, it’s high as well, and it’s good that you recognize that.

Your systolic pressure being high could also be from nerves, just like your pulse. Try your pulse again later when you’ve been resting and are not stressed out. If it is less than 100, that’s a good thing.

If you’re worried about your blood pressure, bring that up next time you visit your personal Dr and see what he/she says. They’ll either tell you it’s not that big a deal like I’m thinking, or will ask you to take a blood pressure monitor home and keep an eye on it (or could have you report in every so often to have it taken there.)

I’m sure you’ll be fine, especially if your pulse comes down during a relaxed, stress-free period. Good luck.

A damaged aortic valve does not seal properly and allows blood to flow back into the ventricle during dystole….what do you expect to happen to the pulse pressure?

Hi Jess,

Blood pressure and pulse pressure falls when there is aortic valve insufficiency. This occurs because blood flows back into the ventricle when the ventricle completes the systolic phase. Please visit the site I have attached for more details.

I am doing a science project that involves this but there wouldn’t be a point to do the project if your blood pulse won’t specifically indicate something. So, why does it matters?
If it helps, the project is if playing guitar affects your blood pulse.

I’m assuming you mean pulse rate? meaning the rate your heart pumps blood?

Pulse rate indicates a lot of things. But the main thing to check first is whether they got faster or slower. The normal pulse rate of a healthy person is 60-120.

Lets say you got the pulse rate of a person and the pulse rate you got is 89. Then it changed to 100. The pulse rate increased because, his heart started to beat faster. His heart started beating faster maybe because he saw his crush , or maybe he got mad, he got excited or he ran or exercised or something. On the other hand, if the pulse changed to lets say 72, then that could mean that he became more relaxed, like maybe he feel asleep or his doing something that made him relax more. Since he felt relaxed, his heart also relaxed therefore causing it to beat less.

if you have any more questions you can email me

Every time i go to the doctor the nurses and the doctors cant find my pulse or blood pressure even with a stethoscope. whats wrong with me?

The answer is, unfortunately, "not very reliable". The typical drugstore blood pressure monitor is a device where you place a finger or thumb onto a button. These are good for measuring your pulse but are notoriously inaccurate for measuring your blood pressure.

You simply cannot get a good reading via the thumb or fingers. You won’t find any monitor like this inside a hospital, a doctor’s surgery or any other medical establishment. An accurate monitor will measure via the upper arm (ideally) or the wrist. That is because the upper arm contains the brachial artery which can be used to make an accurate determination.

The second reason why they do not give good readings is because you typically stand to get a reading. To get an accurate reading you need to be sitting and at rest for a few minutes. Your legs should not be crossed and the point on your body from where the reading is obtained needs to be at the same level as your heart. As you can now see, the typical drugstore blood pressure monitor does not do this!

Even an occasional visit to your doctor is not good enough if you want reliable and accurate readings. That is because many people experience "white coat syndrome" which means that they get readings that are too high or too low when they are in the presence of a doctor. Also, your b.p. fluctuates during the day by quite a lot so you need to obtain several readings and take an average.

The best way to get reliable readings is to buy your own monitor. Frankly, every house should have one because it is the only way to know for sure if you have high b.p. or not.Good Luck
